For foreigners, whose names are commonly wildly misspelled by English scribes, I have looked for spellings where possible that were written by the individuals themselves, failing that by others of the same nationality. In indexing, I have tried to use intuitive modern spellings of names and I have ignored prefixes such as ‘van’ or ‘de’ hence Giles van Gheele is indexed under G for Gheele. In many cases we have further information on the individuals and I welcome enquiries about individual makers of particular interest.
